What is the appropriate manner to organize PhD thesis?


Part One of Thesis: Abstract and Introduction:

  1. Abstract: Lets the audience know the subject matter; gives the thesis statement; provides the hypothesis question to be answered; discusses the components of how the hypothesis question will be answered; and discusses the writer’s perspective on the thesis and hypothesis question.
  2. Introduction: discusses the subject matter; main points that support the subject matter; discusses the scientific methods used to answer the hypothesis question; and provides how the writer’s perspective will be proven.

Part Two of Thesis: Body, Methodology, Terminology, Experiments Conducted and Results, and Figures & Tables:

  1. Body: lays out the main points of the writer’s perspective on the subject matter; lays out writer’s methods used to answer the hypothesis and thesis statement; and supporting evidence to back the writer’s position.
  2. Methodology: Details the scientific testes and scientific experiments used to answer the hypothesis.
  3. Terminology: Lists and defines any terms or words that the intended audience may not understand.
  4. Experiments Conducted and Test Results: Gives the results to all experiments conducted regarding the hypothesis questions.
  5. Figures and Tables: Provides information on the tests results and experiment results in graphs, tables, and figures.

Part Three of Thesis: Conclusion, Bibliography, References List, and Appendix

  1. Conclusion: gives a summary of the research, tests, and experiments conducted in reference to the thesis statement and hypothesis question. Provides the reader with a summary of why the writer’s study results are best for the thesis statement and hypothesis. The conclusion ensures that the reader understands and agrees with the writer’s results and viewpoint on the subject matter.
  2. Bibliography: Gives a list of all sources and resources used in the thesis study like journals, books, and periodicals that are primary sources.
  3. References List: Gives a list of sources and resources used in the thesis study like website articles, unpublished articles, and news articles that are secondary sources.
  4. Appendix: Gives a list of all sources and resources used in the thesis paper like writer’s papers and professor’s papers that are considered unpublished sources.

The student must ensure that they follow the instructions of the PhD committee and assigned professor when doing the PhD thesis.

The student has to set-up a meeting with their assigned professor to get a general understanding of how the paper should be formatted and written.
